Whether you practice health coaching in-person or online (but especially if that’s online!), a professional website is an essential foundation to building and growing a successful health coaching business.

Your health coaching website is your online studio & storefront.

Much more than being an obligatory necessity, your health coaching website serves the vital purpose of connecting you with your ideal health coaching clients, communicating your offerings to them, and making it easy for them to say “Yes, I love it! I want to work with you!”

Why you need a professional website as a health coach

A strategic and well-functioning website can expand your reach as a health coach, attract new clients and fill your health coaching programs.

But, on the other hand, an incomplete or poorly executed website can confuse or turn away potential clients, hinder sales, reduce your website traffic, and fail to convert those website visitors you do get into happy audience members who may eventually purchase from you down the road.

(If you’re wondering, here’s a list of the top website mistakes I see on health coaches’ websites—if you want to be sure you’re not making any. 😇)

There are many ways a professional & optimized website helps grow your health coaching practice:

Your health coaching website is your online storefront

(…or, for online health coaches, your only storefront!)

Whether you’re an in-person or online health coach, whether you sell direct 1:1 health coaching programs or a digital wellness product (yay, passive income streams!), and whether you’re a sole proprietor or operating as a LLC, your website is likely the first place many (if not all) of your potential customers will come in contact with your business. This is your opportunity to make a professional and memorable first impression!

It’s also how you’ll effectively share your message and health coaching offerings, “recruit” your ideal client, connect people to your email list (which you should definitely have!), and grow your audience to reach your health coaching business goals.

Think of your health coaching website as your store window display—you want to create a professional and enticing display that draws people in to peruse your products and services. Whether you’re showcasing your 1:1 health coaching services or selling an online wellness course, your website is where your potential customers and clients will learn about what you have to offer…and perhaps poke around to see more!

Your online presence builds + defines your health coaching brand

Your health coaching website is an opportunity to build and define your brand as a health coach. That’s not just marketing slang, that’s an important part of attracting (and connecting with!) prospective health coaching clients.

From your business logo to your colors, fonts, imagery and website layout, your health coaching website branding should be designed specifically to appeal to your ideal health coaching client.

While plenty of health coaches create their own DIY branding (and that’s totally possible with my favorite free graphic design tool, Canva!), others choose to work with a marketing professional or graphic designer to develop their brand guidelines and assets.

Either way, it’s important to define your health coaching business brand identity and then communicate that consistently throughout your website and online presence.

Your health coaching website attracts your health coaching clients

The #healthcoachlife typically involves a regular search for new clients.

A website that effectively highlights your work as a health coach (and what you specialize in and why that’s important!), and promotes your health coaching services can greatly assist in turning your search-for-new-health-coaching-clients on autopilot and bringing in those ideal clients right to your doorstep—allowing you do more of what you love to do, for people who need exactly that and are actively looking for it.

As a health coach, it’s important to invest in good SEO (search engine optimization)—the process of optimizing your website to attract your ideal clients.

For health coaches offering in-person services, optimizing your place-based SEO can also improve your search ranking to connect your business with more local clients.

SEO is definitely more than just a buzzword—it’s an important part of your online visibility as a health coach. When your website is optimized for search engine visibility, your ranking will improve in search results (aka Google), ultimately getting you and your health coaching business more visibility among your target audience of ideal health coaching clients.

Your website is a hub for your health coaching process

Your website can serve as a hub for multiple tools or technologies you use in your health coaching business.

For example, your website can house your wellness blog (a primary way of building SEO and growing your audience!), your online store where clients purchase their health coaching programs, your online scheduling tool where clients schedule their health coaching sessions with you, your client forms and surveys, and even password-protected membership pages—all under one website, and all with a cohesive look and feel.

Seamless user experience = happier customers. 💃

Your health coaching website helps grow your email list

A key feature of a well-built website is that it’s a gateway for your email list—aka your list of potential health coaching customers.

When people stop by your website, take a look around and like what they see, you’re positioned to give them an offer to receive more related content they’ll also like (such as a key opt-in offer), which allows you to grow a list of people who truly want to receive what you’re offering.

It’s important to grow an email list of interested subscribers and engage them with valuable wellness content via your regular email newsletters because then, later down the road, you’ll be able to communicate with this list to share your paid product offers, launches, and more—and you will already have invested in building rapport and establishing yourself as a trusted wellness expert.

An effective health coaching website attracts your ideal clients, informs them of the value you can offer through your services & engages them in continued communication with your business.

How to build a professional health coaching website

Okay, so we need a professional and effective health coaching website! Now… how to do that?

Can you DIY a professional website for your health coaching business?

These days it’s wonderfully easy (and affordable!) to build your own website.

There are plenty of DIY platforms out there—Squarespace (my fave, and what our website is built on), WordPress, Wix and Weebly, just to name a few. These website builders use drag-and-drop interfaces that allow you to create and update your own health coaching website without needing to know how to code.

But, despite how easy it is to create a website yourself, there are some limitations that come with building your own site via ready-made templates.

Some of the limitations of DIY-ing your own health coaching website:

  • there are limits to how much you can customize

  • certain design or functionality may not be available without knowledge of back-end code

  • the site might not be optimized for search engine visibility

  • a DIY-approach may end up looking less professional than you’d like (uh-oh!)

Because of this, some health coaches prefer to work with a professional web designer who can help them quickly and efficiently design their dream wellness website.

How much does it cost to hire a professional web designer?

Working with a professional web designer to create a custom website for your health coaching business can fall anywhere in the $500 - $5,000+ range, depending on the needs of your business and the level of experience of your web designer.

While this may seem like a gigantic investment to some (particularly new health coaches on a budget!), it’s important to note that your website is likely the single most important marketing tool in your health coaching business, in terms of its ability to attract potential clients and convert them into paying customers. For this reason, many health coaches, especially those focusing on online health coaching, find that a professional website tends to be worth its investment many times over.

So, whether you’re able to DIY a high-quality health coaching website yourself (that’s awesome!), or you’re ready to work with a professional web designer to get you there, a high quality, professional website can help significantly in growing your wellness business and brand.
